Carlos Alcarez Garfia was born on May 5, 2003 in El Palmar, Murcia, Spain to parents Carlos and Virginia. He has three siblings. Alvaro Alcaraz Garfia is the oldest brother. In contrast, Sergio and Jaime Alcaraz Garcia are the two younger siblings of the Spanish tennis player. He started playing tennis at Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia, where his father was the director of the tennis academy. In 2018, he started playing at Juan Carlos Ferrero’s Equality JC Ferrero Sports Academy.

As a junior, Alcaraz was ranked as high as No. 22 worldwide and won two titles on the ITF junior circuit. In February 2020, at 16, Alcaraz made his ATP main-draw debut at the Rio Open after receiving a wildcard into the singles main draw. There he defeated Albert Ramos Vinolas. Federico Correa eventually defeated Alcaraz in the second round.

At 17, Alcaraz qualified for the main draw of the Australian Open, making him the youngest participant in the men’s singles competition. He won his Grand Slam debut by defeating fellow qualifier Botik van de Zandschulp in straight sets before losing to Mikael Ymer in the second round.

Alcaraz became the youngest match winner in Madrid Open history, beating Adrian Mannarino as a wildcard and breaking 18-year-old Rafael Nadal’s 2004 record. In the second round, he lost to five-time champion Nadal on the 18th of Alcaraz.

At the French Open, Alcaraz defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

In July 2021, he reached his first ATP final at the 2021 Croatia Open Umag, defeating top seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas. He then defeated Richard Gasquet to win his first ATP title and became the youngest tour-level champion since 18-year-old Kei Nishikori won the 2008 Delray Beach Open. A week after Miami, Alcaraz began his European clay swing at the Monte-Carlo Masters. After receiving a first-round bye, he lost to Sebastian Korda in the second round. At the Barcelona Open, Alcaraz defeated top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals to break into the top 10 for the first time on April 25.

Alcaraz enters the 2022 US Open as the No. 3 seed and has a chance to become the youngest world No. 1 by reaching the championship match or winning the title after the tournament. He defeated Sebastian Baez, Federico Correa, and Jenson Brooksby to reach the fourth round. In the semifinals, he defeated American Francis Tiafoe in his third consecutive 5-set match. Alcaraz also became the youngest person to reach the semifinals and final of the US Open in 1990 when Pete Sampras won the title at age 19. He will play 5th seed Casper Rudd in the final, the winner becoming the new world no.1.
