His mother, Kelly, played recreational ice hockey for a year as a child before turning his attention to skiing, while his father, Brian, was a high school ice hockey player and Boston Bruins fan. On October 5, 2016, the Oilers named McDavid, their captain for the 2016–17 season. McDavid became the youngest captain in NHL history. Although McDavid recorded a goal and three assists in the tournament, he was pointless in the final three games and spent most of the bronze medal match, in which Canada fell 2-1 to Russia, on the bench. McDavid first joined the Canadian senior team for the 2016 IIHF World Championship in Russia and was named the North American captain of the 23-and-under Canadian and the United States players at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
