The modern game of tennis originated in the late 19th century as lawn tennis in Birmingham, England. The rules of modern tennis have changed little since the 1890s.

Tennis is a racket game played against a single opponent or between two teams of two players. Each player uses a tennis racket that hits a hollow rubber ball attached to the cord on or around the net and on the opponent’s court. The game aims to move the ball, so the opponent cannot play a legitimate return. The player unable to return the ball legally will not gain a point, while the opposite player will.

Jannik Sinner Childhood

Sinner started playing both skiing and tennis at the age of three. He was one of Italy’s top junior skiers between the ages of eight and twelve, winning a national championship at the Giant Slalom at eight and earning a national runner-up at twelve. While training in skiing, he quit tennis for a year at seven before his father pressured him to return to the sport. When he started playing again, he started working with Heribert Mayr as his first regular coach. Nonetheless, tennis was his third priority behind skiing and football.

At thirteen, Sinner decided to give up skiing and football for tennis. He preferred it to ski because he wanted to compete directly against an opponent. He wanted to be in a stand-alone game where he could make all the decisions, an opportunity he didn’t have in a team game like football.

He decided to leave his family and move to Bordighera, Riviera, Italy, to train at the Piatti Tennis Center under Riccardo Piatti and Massimo Sartori, a decision supported by his parents. In the center, Sinner lived with the family of Luka Cvjetkovic, one of his coaches. Before starting full-time tennis training with Piatti, he played only twice a week.
