Sydney Michelle McLaughlin is an American hurdler and sprinter who holds the world record in the 400-meter hurdles. She is a 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist. McLaughlin was the first woman to break 52 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2020 USA Olympic Trials with a world record average of 51.90 seconds. She won the silver medal at the 2019 World Championships. Sydney McLaughlin won gold at the 2019 World Championships and the Tokyo Games as part of the women’s 4×400 m relay team. Her father, Willie McLaughlin, is a member of the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame as a three-time All-American. She was a semifinalist in the 400 meters at the 1984 Olympic Trials. Her mother, Mary Neumeister McLaughlin, was a 2:12 half miler at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Tonawanda, New York, where she ran on the boys’ team. Her parents met as students at Manhattan College; When Mary arrived in 1979, there was no women’s track team, so she became the manager of the men’s track team.
Her older sister Morgan ran for St. Peter’s University. Her older brother, Taylor, ran for the University of Michigan and won silver in the 400m hurdles at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships. Both he and Sydney qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic team.

Sydney McLaughlin finished second behind Shamier Little in the 400m hurdles at the 2014 National Junior (Under-20) Championships. Her time of 55.63 was a national high school freshman record and a world age-14 best. She would have qualified to represent the United States at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships but was too young to qualify.
Sydney McLaughlin improved her 400-meter hurdles best of 55.28 at the 2015 National Youth Trials. She qualified for the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia, where she won gold in 55.94. She finished the year as the world youth and junior leader in the event.
Sydney McLaughlin won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.46 at the 2016 New Balance National Outdoor High School Championships.
Sydney McLaughlin won the USATF Junior Championships the following week in 54.54. In recognition of her accomplishments, she was named the Gatorade National Girls Athlete of the Year.

University of Kentucky
