In his senior year, Griner led the Nimitz Cougars in the Texas 5A Girls Basketball State Championship game, where Nimitz lost 52-43 to Mansfield Summit High School. Greener has dunked 52 times in 32 games as a senior, setting a record of seven dunk singles games against Aldine High School. Houston Mayor Bill White declared May 7, 2009, Brittney Griner Day. On November 11, 2008, she recorded 25 blocks in a game against Houston Alief Hastings, the most by a woman in a high school game in the United States. In his 2008-09 season, he recorded 318 blocks, a single-season record.
Greener was named a WBCA All-American and led the team to the 2009 WBCA High School All-America game, scoring 20 points and nine rebounds.

Griner was the only player still playing in college on the final roster of the 2012 U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team. Except for Griner, the average age on the finalist roster was about 30 years, while Griner was 22 years old at the time of the Olympics. Griner decided not to participate in the 2012 Olympics in April 2012 due to family illness and his school schedule.
In 2016, Griner played for the U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team at the Summer Olympics. She won his first Olympic gold medal, beating Spain 101-72 in the final. She wins an Olympic gold medal, FIBA World Cup gold medal, and WNBA title.
