Neeraj Chopra Career

2016 Junior World Champion and Army induction

Chopra achieved a new personal best during the Athletics Final in Guwahati at the 2016 South Asian Games on 9 February. He won gold in the 82.23 m hurdles, lagging in the 83 m Olympic qualifying mark. Neeraj started training that month under Australian coach Gary Calvert. Chopra won a gold medal in the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland; he set a world junior record of 86.48 m and became the first Indian athlete to set a new national record. Although his U20 record surpassed defending Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott, Chopra failed to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics because the cut-off date for the U20 Championship was 11 July, a week before. His preparation for Rio was also hampered by a back injury sustained during the Federation Cup in New Delhi in April 2016, significantly affecting his performance in the competition.

The Indian Army offered him the direct appointment as a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Rajputana Rifles, with the rank of Naib Subedar, which is not usually given immediately to athletes who are usually appointed as Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO). He left the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports to train at the Sports Authority of India Center in Bangalore in September 2016. In December 2011, he was formally inducted as JCO and was later granted extended leave to continue his training.

In the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships, Chopra won gold with a throw of 85.23 metres. He then travelled to London for the World Championships in August but was eliminated before reaching the final. Chopra suffered a significant groin injury in the Zurich Diamond League final, retaining the injury during his third attempt throw, where Neeraj achieved a distance of 83.39 meters. He fouled his fourth attempt and missed his last two authorized attempts. Chopra’s first and best throw of 83.80 meters brought him to the finish in seventh place.

In the men’s javelin throw at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he recorded a season-best effort of 86.47 m. He became the first Indian to win a javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games. He again broke the national record in the Doha Diamond League by throwing 87.43 meters in May 2018.

In August 2018, Chopra represented India in the Asian Games and was the flag bearer for the Indian team during the 2018 Asian Games Parade of Nations. On 27 August 2018, he won a gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the 88 Asian Games, throwing a distance of 88.06 m and breaking his Indian national record. The Asian Games was India’s first gold medal in the javelin throw. Chopra was recommended by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for the country’s highest sports award, the Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna and was awarded the Arjuna Award in September 2018. The Army further rewarded him.

In preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which were later postponed to 2021, Chopra trained under his German coach Uwe Hohn under the guidance of biomechanics expert Klaus Bertonitz and physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha.

2020 Tokyo Olympics

Neeraj Chopra made his Olympic debut representing India at the Japan National Stadium on 4 August 2021. He was at the top of his qualifying team to enter the final by throwing 86.65 meters.

Chopra won the gold medal in the August final by throwing 87.58 m in his second attempt, becoming the first Indian Olympian to win a gold medal in athletics and the first post-independence Indian Olympic medal in athletics.

Chopra’s medal brought India a final seven medals in the Games, surpassing the country’s best performance of the six medals won at the 2012 London Olympics. As a result of his performances in Tokyo in the men’s javelin throw, Chopra became the second-ranked athlete internationally.

Chopra is the second Indian to win an Olympic gold medal after Abhinav Bindra, who won a gold medal in the men’s 10m air rifle at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He dedicated his victory to former Olympian sprinters Milkha Singh and P.T. Usaha from India.

Chopra won the first Olympic medal for India in track and field, but the status is controversial according to some historians. Both the International Olympic Committee and the Indian Olympic Association officially recognize that Norman Pritchard, the first Indian track and field Olympic medalist, participated in the 1900 Paris Olympics, even though India was then under British rule.
