On June 26, 2014, Smart was selected by the Boston Celtics with the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He joined the Celtics for the 2014 NBA Summer League and signed with the team on July 10. On December 4, he was assigned to the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League.
