Simmons was born on July 20 1996, in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia, to father Dave and mother Julie. His father is an African-American immigrant who became a naturalized citizen of Australia, and his mother is a white Australian. At 15, Simmons played basketball for Box Hill Senior Secondary College in the 2011 Australian Schools Championships before taking up a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport in 2012. Sophomore year
In January 2013, Simmons moved to the United States to compete against athletes. He attended Montverde Academy in Monteverde, Florida. After competing in the Jordan Brand Classic International Games, Simmons returned to Melbourne and joined the Bullin Boomers of the Big V competition in June 2013. He played six games for Bullen, averaging 12.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 steals. 2.3 blocks per game. On October 14, 2013, Simmons committed to Louisiana State University, choosing LSU over other offers from Kentucky, Kansas, and Duke.
Junior year
Simmons returned to Monteverde Academy for his junior season in 2013-14. Monteverde finished the season with a 28-0 record with a 71-62 win over Oak Hill Academy in the High School National Tournament at Madison Square Garden. College career
Entering his first year of college, Simmons began his career with the LSU Tigers on a four-stop national tour in Australia. With this opportunity to play basketball in his home country, Simmons made his debut for LSU on August 15 in an 89–75 win over the Newcastle All-Stars in the first game of LSU’s preseason tour of Australia. After returning to the United States, Simmons was featured on the 35th-anniversary cover of the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook, was named the SEC’s preseason player of the year, and earned Associated Press preseason All-America team honors.

On November 22, Simmons recorded his first triple-double of the season and 24th of his career after recording 10 points, ten rebounds, and 13 assists in a 115–104 win over the San Antonio Spurs. On December 7, Simmons scored a career-high 34 points, including his second NBA career three-pointer, while making 12 of 14 shots in a 141–94 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
On January 20, 2020, Simmons scored 34 points and recorded 12 assists and 12 rebounds in a 117–111 win over the Brooklyn Nets. On January 30, Simmons was awarded his second All-Star appearance.
