Joao Felix Professional career

Benfica (2016–2019)

Felix made his professional debut on September 17, 2016, for Benfica’s reserve team in LigaPro at 16. He played 13 matches and scored three goals during the season. Later, on January 30, 2018, he scored a hat-trick in a 5–0 home win against Famalicao. That season, Felix played in the 2016–17 UEFA Youth League, where he was a key part of Benfica reaching the competition’s final.

Felix was promoted to Benfica’s first team for the 2018–19 season, making his debut in a 2–0 Primeira Liga win at Boavista on August 18. A week later, he scored his first Primeira Liga goal, thus becoming the youngest player in a Lisbon derby. On January 16, 2019, he scored the qualifying goal against Vitoria de Guimaraes in the quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup. Later, Felix was praised for performing in a 4–2 away win over Sporting CP in the league on February 3. A month later, he scored an equalizer in a 2–1 win over Porto in the league.

On April 11, 2019, Felix scored a hat-trick in a 4–2 UEFA Europa League win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Across Europe’s top seven leagues, he is second only to Kai Havertz and Jadon Sancho for goals and assists among teenagers, respectively.

Atletico Madrid

On July 3, 2019, Felix signed a seven-year contract with Spanish club Atlético Madrid for a €126 million (£113 million) transfer fee, the fourth-highest paid in football as well as the second-highest. After arriving at the club as a teenager, he was given the number 7 shirt previously worn by Barcelona-bound Antoine Griezmann.

Felix made his competitive debut on August 19, 2019, in a 1–0 win against Getafe. Despite not scoring a goal, he managed to win a penalty for Atlético. On August 25, Felix assisted Vitolo in a 1–0 away win against Leganes. He scored his first La Liga goal on September 1 in a 3–2 win over Eibar. On October 1, Felix scored his first UEFA Champions League goal and another in a 2–0 win over Lokomotiv Moscow, becoming Atlético Madrid’s youngest goalscorer at 19.

On October 19, Felix suffered an ankle injury against Valencia following a rash challenge from Dani Perez, leaving his team with just ten men on the field. Initially, Simeone thought Felix’s injury was not too serious until the club’s medical team revealed that the ankle injury could be serious. Felix returned on November 23 in a 1–1 away draw against Granada. At this time, Felix was one of the 30 candidates who were nominated for the 2019 Ballon d’Or.

On November 27, 2019, Felix became the second Portuguese Player, after Renato Sánchez, to win the Golden Boy Award for the best player in Europe under age 21.

On January 9, 2020, Felix made his Supercopa de España debut, starting in a 3–2 win over Barcelona in the semi-finals. On January 23, Felix made his Copa del Rey debut in the round of 32. Three days later, Felix suffered a second injury to his leg in a 0–0 draw against Leganes. He returned on February 23, replacing Vitolo in the 57th minute and scoring the third goal in a 3–1 home win over Villarreal.

On March 11, 2020, in extra time of the second leg of Atlético’s tie against Liverpool, Felix eventually assisted Marcos Llorente in a 3–2 win. On May 25, Felix injured his left knee, which sidelined him for at least three weeks. On August 13, Felix was substituted in the second half of the Champions League quarter-final against RB Leipzig.

On October 27, he scored a brace in a 3–2 win over Red Bull Salzburg in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League group stage. After back-to-back braces against Osasuna and Cádiz in La Liga, he was named the league’s player of the Month for November 2020. He contracted Covid-19 in February, forcing him to miss Atlético’s next matches against Celta Vigo and Granada.

Felix missed Atlético’s first three matches of the 2021–22 season as he continued his rehabilitation from an ankle injury suffered in November. After suffering a hamstring injury in the league against Osasuna on November 20, Felix began to fall out with manager Diego Simeone, losing his place as a starter. On February 19, 2022, Felix made his 100th appearance for the club, opening the scoring and providing an assist in Atlético’s 3–0 win over Osasuna. On April 17, during a match against Espanyol, Felix suffered a hamstring injury, which ruled him out for the remainder of the season. At the end of the season, Felix was awarded Atlético Madrid’s Player of the Season award, named by the club’s supporters, after finishing the campaign with ten goals and six assists.

2022–23: Relationship with Diego Simeone and loan to Chelsea

Felix began the 2022–23 season on August 15, providing a hat-trick of assists for the first time in his career as Atlético defeated Getafe 3–0 at home. In the process, he became the third Portuguese Player to provide three assists in a match in La Liga. After playing sporadically for Atlético in the next match, Felix came on as a 60th-minute substitute and scored his first two goals of the season on October 29, as he was named man of the match in a 3–2 away loss to Cádiz. On January 11, 2023, Felix joined Premier League club Chelsea for the remainder of the 2022–23 season, extending his contract with Atlético until 2027. He debuted the following day in a 2–1 defeat to Fulham. Returning from suspension on February 11, Felix scored his first goal for the club in a 1–1 league draw away to West Ham United.
