Lorenzo Cain Injury & Career
Minor leagues
Milwaukee Brewers selected Cain in the 17th round of the 2004 MLB draft from Tallahassee Community College. He began his career in 2005, playing for their Rookie league Helena Brewers and AZL Brewers. In 2006, he was promoted to Class A West Virginia Power, where he was named to the South Atlantic League mid.
Milwaukee Brewers (2010)
On July 16, 2010, pitcher Doug Davis was on the disabled list. That evening, he made his major league debut as a pinch-hitter against the Atlanta Braves. Braves left fielder Matt Diaz’s diving catch snatched his first at-bat hit. Two days later, in his next bat in the same series, he got his first big league hit. Cain appeared in 43 games for the Brewers.
Kansas City Royals
Cain started in 2013 as a centre fielder with Jarrod Dyson as his backup. On August 10, Cain was placed on the disabled list with a pressed left diagonal.
In Game 2 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Baltimore Orioles, Cain added another stunning addition to his post-season highlight relay.
Cain eventually won the ALCS Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) for his field and plate efforts.
Lorenzo Cain’s defensive prowess continued in the World Series against the San Francisco Giants, where he made a catch to the wall in Game 1. Cain caught two more spectacular diving catches in Game 3 to secure a 3-2 win for the Royals. In the crucial game 6, in which the Royals faced elimination, he went to 3 for 2, driving three runs, including singles, doubles and two walks, and made another running catch to the Kansas City Giants 10-0.
Lorenzo Cain was one of five players expelled for his involvement in a bench-clearing scandal. On April 25, 2015, he was suspended for two games. Cain had the option to appeal, but it dropped on May 3, 2015, so the stay will be effective. In 2015, he was named to his first All-Star team and helped lead the Royals to the 2015 AL Central Division title.
Return to the Brewers
Lorenzo Cain signed a five-year, $80 million contract to return to the Brewers on January 26, 2018. Again, he was named to the 2018 MLB All-Star Game. That season, too, Cain finished seventh in the NL MVP ballot and played a key role in the Brewers in a game to reach the 2018 World Series, losing to the Dodgers in the 2018 National League Championship Series.
Before Cain played five games briefly in the 2020 MLB season, he announced on August 1 that he was leaving the rest of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned to play in the 2021 season but played only 78 games due to a hamstring injury that ruled him out for the whole of June and almost the whole of July.
After batting .179 in 43 games for Milwaukee in 2022, the Brewers nominated Lorenzo Cain for the June 18 assignment.
