In 2008, De Vries won the WSK World Series and the German Junior Championship for the KF3 category. In 2009 he retained his German Junior and WSK World Series titles and won the European KF3 Championship. In September, he won the 2010 Karting World Championship. Formula Renault Eurocup

In 2012, De Vries switched to single-seaters. De Vries achieved his first podium finish with second place in his debut race at Alcaniz.

De Vries finished the season in fifth place. In addition, De Vries took part in several races in the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC. He was on the podium four times in eleven starts in the series and finished tenth in the drivers’ standings.

In 2014, De Vries stayed with Koiranen and competed in his third EuroCup season. He won six races and finished on the podium in 11 of 14. In 2015, de Vries switched to the Formula Renault 3.5 series, racing for DAMS. De Vries competed in the GP3 series in 2016 with ART Grand Prix. Before the round at Spa-Francorchamps, De Vries switched to racing engineering. For the 2018 season, De Vries has moved to partner Sean Gelel at Prema Racing. 2019 De Vries remained in Formula 2, returning to his former team ART Grand Prix alongside 2018 GP3 vice-champion Nikita Mazepin.

FIA World Endurance Championship

On 15 March 2018, De Vries signed with Racing Team Netherlands to compete in the LMP2 class. He won the 6 Hours of Fuji on 6 October 2019 with this team. De Vries drove the last stint and put the car over the finish line.

On 6 July 2020, De Vries was announced as the Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe GmbH test and reserve driver.

In the week of testing before the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans, ACO officials banned TDS Racing x Valente driver Philippe Cimadomo from starting. Due to his reserved role for the Toyota Hypercar team, he was already at the circuit and was asked to step up due to Philippe Cimadomo’s bronze and de Vries’ platinum status.

Formula E

On 11 September 2019, de Vries was announced as the new Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E team driver for the 2019–20 Formula E season after failing to find a seat in Formula One for the 2020 Formula One season. The team finished the season 1–2, led by Vandoorne de Vries, who finished 11th on the season with 60 points.

For the 2020–21 season, de Vries continued with Stoffel Vandoorne in the newly named Mercedes-EQ Formula E team. He qualified on pole for the first race of the season-opening Diria ePrix double-header. De Vries took his second victory of the season at Valencia, where he was one of the only drivers not to run out of usable power before the end of the race.

After two rounds in which he scored two points, De Vries fought back to win both races of the London ePrix, finishing second in both races. In the first race in Berlin, he did not score any points but managed to maintain his lead in the standings. Qualifying 13th for the season’s final race, De Vries was given an early advantage. De Vries finished the race in eighth place, thus winning his first world championship in Formula E. The Dutchman finished the campaign with two wins, four podiums and 99 points, seven ahead of vice-champion Mortarara.

De Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne remained with Mercedes in their swansong season in Formula E. De Vries won the first race of season 8 at Diria and finished 9th in the championship with 106 points. De Vries left at the end of the season, securing a deal to compete in Formula One.

Formula One career

De Vries signed into the McLaren Young Driver Program in 2010 and the Audi Sport Racing Academy in 2016. He left McLaren ahead of the 2019 season to focus on his duties at Audi.

In December 2020, De Vries and Formula E teammate Stoffel Vandoorne made their first Formula One test for the Mercedes team at the season-ending Young Driver Test. The following year he became one of the reserve drivers for the team, partnering his Mercedes-EQ teammate Stoffel Vandoorne in the role.

He made his Formula 1 practice debut at the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix. For the French Grand Prix, de Vries ran another practice session in the Mercedes, replacing seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. De Vries again drove a Mercedes in free practice for the Mexico City Grand Prix in place of George Russell.

In September, de Vries tested the Alpine A521 at Hungaring with Antonio Giovinazzi and Jacques Doohan.

For the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix, De Vries was appointed Lando Norris’ replacement at McLaren if Norris could not race. Even McLaren cars had de Vries seat fittings. However, Norris recovered the following day and competed in the Grand Prix.

At the Italian Grand Prix, de Vries took part in the first practice in place of Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin. De Vries then replaced Alex Albon at Williams for the third practice. He was able to advance to Q2 and qualify thirteenth. He started the eighth journey after penalizing several drivers. He finished the race in ninth position and was awarded Driver of the Day by the fans.

Scuderia Alfatauri signed De Vries for the 2023 season.

De Vries finished the season-opening 14th at the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. In a chaotic Australian Grand Prix, he retired after a collision with Logan Sargent and was classified 15th. De Vries qualified last and crashed out of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. A few days after finishing 17th at the British Grand Prix, De Vries was released by Scuderia Alfatauri and replaced by Daniel Ricciardo. De Vries was criticized for his performance, particularly by Red Bull Motorsport advisor Helmut Marko.
