Tadej Pogacar Professional career

Pogacar joined United Arab Emirates Team Emirates for the 2019 season. He made his debut for the team at the Tour Down Under, where he finished 13th overall. He went on to win the Volta ao Algarve, taking the race lead after winning the second stage. He also finished sixth at the Tour of the Basque Country. In May 2019, he won the Tour of California, becoming the youngest rider to win a UCI World Tour stage race. In June, Pogacar won the Slovenian national time trial championship, beating Matej Mohrić by 29 seconds.

In August, Pogacar was named in the team’s starting list for the Vuelta a Espana, his debut in a Grand Tour.

Before the start of the 2020 season, Pogacar announced that he was making his Tour de France debut, where he planned to ride in support of Fabio Aru. He made his season debut at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, winning two stages en route to the race win. At the short UAE Tour, he won the fifth stage, which ended over Jebel Hafit and finished second to Adam Yates on GC. In March, cycling events were among those postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic. At the Slovenian National Championships, he finished second to Primoz Roglic in the road race before beating him in the time trial, defending his title.

Pogacar competed in the men’s road race at the World Championships, where he rode in support of Roglic, who eventually finished sixth. Three days later, he competed in La Fleche Wallonne, finishing ninth. He ended his season at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, where he originally finished fourth.

He started the 2021 season by winning the Tour of UAE, Tirreno-Adriatico, and Liege-Bastogne-Liege – a monument and his first win at the Tour of Slovenia.

He started the 2021 Tour de France as one of the pre-race favourites alongside Primoz Roglic, Geraint Thomas, and Richard Carapaz. On stage one, he finished eight seconds behind stage winner Julian Alaphilippe with the group of favourites and led the white jersey classification. Pogacar won the fifth stage, the first trial of the race, finishing 18 seconds ahead of Stefan Kung.

Pogacar’s victory made him the youngest cyclist to win consecutive tours. It was also the second year in a row that he won three individual jerseys.

After the Tour de France, Pogacar won the bronze medal in the men’s road race at the Olympic Games and edged out Wout van Aart in the sprint for the silver medal. At the end of July, UAE Team Emirates announced they had agreed to a one-year extension to his contract, committing him to the team until the end of 2027. Pogacar took a break from racing after the Olympics, returning to competition—Classic Ost-France in Bretagne at the end of August.

At the Road World Championships in Flanders later that month, Pogacar finished 37th in the race.

Pogacar won his second monument at Il Lombardia. Pogacar won the resulting two-person sprint to the finish line. He became the third rider after Fausto Coppi and Eddy Marcoux to win two Monuments and the Tour in the same year, and only the fourth rider to win the Tour de France and the Tour of Lombardy in the same season.

With the start of the 2021 off-season, the director of the Giro d’Italia, Mauro Vegni, challenged Pogacar to complete the Giro-Tour double. Vegni said, “If I’m not wrong, Pantani was the last. So perhaps it’s time for a rider to add their name to the roll of honour.” Pogacar said he plans to try to win the Giro, but not in 2022. The only riders since Pantani to complete a Grand Tour double are Alberto Contador in 2008 and Chris Froome in 2017.

Pogacar opened the season by defending his title at the UAE Tour, winning both mountaintop stages. Later, Pogacar went to Italy to race an Italian block, starting at Strade Bianche. Pogacar began his title defence at Tirreno-Adriatico. He won the fourth stage uphill before dominating the queen stage. Pogacar won the general classification by nearly two minutes over Jonas Vingegaard and the points and young rider classification. Pogcar rode in Milan–San Remo, where he attacked Poggio several times before finishing fifth.

At the Montreal GP, Pogacar was part of a five-person leadership group.

To finish the season, Pogacar went to Italy for the Fall Classic. At the Giro dell’Emilia, Pogacar finished second after being dropped by Enrique Mas on the final climb to San Luca. Pogacar finished his season at Il Lombardia, the last monument of the year. After his team controlled most of the race, Pogacar attacked the climb to Civiglio with about 20 kilometres to go. With 16 wins, Pogacar finished the season as the rider with the most wins in the 2022 season in the men’s peloton.

Pogacar started the 2023 season with a win at Jaen Paraiso Interior.

He continued his dominance of the classics with three more wins at the Ronde van Vlaanderen, the Amstel Gold Race and La Fleche Wallonne.

At the start of Liege–Bastogne–Liege, Pogacar crashed with Mikkel Honore, breaking his wrist and ending his race. His wrist surgery was successful.
