After an initial interest in artistic gymnastics, Giorgi devoted himself to tennis after helping her brother train when she was five. She was subjected to rigorous training by her father, Sergio. In 2000, she was spotted by tennis coach Nick Bollettieri, who subsequently offered her seven months of training.
