Nishikori has won 12 singles titles and was runner-up at the 2014 U.S. Open, making him the first male player to do so. Kei Nishikori was born on December 29, 1989, in Matsu, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Nishikori loves to play football, golf, read, and listen to music during his free time. Junior career

Nishikori played his first junior match in April 2002 at 13 in a Grade 1 tournament in Japan. He won the 2004 title at the Riyadh 21 tournament in Rabat, Morocco, and was in the boys’ singles quarter-finals at the 2006 Junior French Open. Nishikori defeated Michael McClune to win the 2007 Luxilon Cup held at the 2007 Sony Ericsson Open.

As a junior, he compiled a 73-37 win-loss record in singles and 53-31 in doubles.

Nishikori qualified for the Indianapolis Tennis Championships. Nishikori is the youngest player to reach the quarter-finals in Indianapolis.

Nishikori headed to Washington, D.C., for his third career ATP event; he defeated Temuraz Gabashvili in the first round. He qualified for the China Open in Beijing. In October, Nishikori received a wildcard entry into the Tokyo AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships. Nishikori represented Japan at the Asian Hopman Cup in Bangkok, Thailand.

He entered the Delray Beach tournament and ranked world No. 244 in the qualifiers. He defeated Nicolas Todero and Alex Bogomolov Jr. to enter the main draw. He became the first Japanese man to win an ATP event in nearly 16 years.

At the Summer Olympics, Nishikori lost to Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro in the quarter-finals.

Nishikori defended his title at the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships in Memphis. Due to a left groin injury, he gave a walkover to 2nd seed Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. He withdrew from Japan’s Davis Cup quarter-final against the Czech Republic.

Nishikori reached his first Grand Slam final at the 2014 U.S. Open. In the quarter-finals, he scored a rare upset over Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka. He also became the first Japanese man. Nishikori defeated world number one Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals to become the first Asian man to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament.

At the 2015 Mutua Madrid Open, Nishikori received a first-round bye and advanced by defeating David Goffin. He reached the semi-finals by defeating Roberto Bautista Agut and David Ferrer, respectively, in straight sets.

Nishikori returned after a 5-month injury layoff and began his 2018 season playing in American Challenger Tour events. He lost in the first round against American qualifier Denis Novikov in Newport Beach.

Nishikori began his 2019 season at Brisbane International. He defeated Denis Kudla, sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov and Jeremy Chardy to reach the final, where he defeated fourth seed Daniil Medvedev in three sets to win the title.

Nishikori was seeded seventh at the French Open. He defeated Quentin Halsey and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. In the quarter-finals, he was defeated in straight sets by defending champion Rafael Nadal, who went on to defend his title.

He reached the fourth round without dropping a set. He dropped a set against Mikhail Kukushkin in the fourth round but won the match in four, reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for the second consecutive year.

Nishikori started the year playing in the 2021 ATP Cup. At the Australian Open, Nishikori lost in the first round to Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets.

Nishikori reached his first quarter-final since Wimbledon 2019 in Rotterdam.
