Club career
Marcelo Flores joined Arsenal Academy on a free transfer in 2019. He made a bright start to the 2020–21 campaign with Arsenal’s under-18s, scoring three goals in two games. After training with the first team, he signed his first professional contract in October 2020. Shortly afterwards, he was featured in The Guardian’s “Next Generation 2020” featuring some of the best young players in the world. He was called up to Arsenal’s first team for the first time on 4 April 2022, setting the bench for the match against Crystal Palace, although he did not appear as a substitute.
International career
Marcelo Flores is eligible to represent either Canada, England, or Mexico. In 2019, Flores was first called up to the England under-16 squad, but that same year he decided to join the Mexico under-16 squad after playing every game in the Montaigu Tournament.
In December 2020, Marcelo Flores received a call from a Canadian camp to be held in January 2021 but later withdrew to stay with Arsenal. On 18 June 2021, he was named to Canada’s temporary 60-member squad for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
In September 2021, Marcelo Flores appeared for the Mexican under-20 team in a double-header against Spain. In November, Flores was invited to participate in the 2021 Revelations Cup by Luis Ernesto Perez. He scored two goals in three appearances. Later that month, when Mexico won the competition, senior national team manager Gerardo Martino revealed the possibility of calling Flores. On 29 November, Arsenal confirmed that Flores had received his first senior call.
Marcelo Flores finally made his senior national team debut in a friendly against Chile, making his debut as a substitute in the 83rd minute in a 2-2 draw. In May 2022, Flores pledged to represent Mexico internationally, as he was still eligible to represent Canada or England, having only played in friendly matches.
