Ice hockey is also played as a professional sport.

Ice hockey (or hockey in general) is a winter team sport played on ice skates, usually with specific lines and symbols for playing in an ice skating rink. Nazem Kadri was born on October 8, 1990, in London, Ontario, Canada. He is the second of five children and the only son of Sam and Sue Kadri. His grandparents were born in Kfar Danis, Lebanon, and moved to Ontario when Kadri’s father was four. Sam Kadri wanted to play hockey in his teens, but his family could not afford to play with their son. When Nazem was born, his father decided that he should be given a chance to play sports. Kadri started ice skating at the age of two, joined his first hockey team at four, and continued to play at an elite level for the next two years. The Kadri family also participated in the National Hockey League (NHL) Games; Despite being close to Toronto, they supported the Montreal Canadians.

Kadri was a successful hockey, basketball and volleyball player, first at Jack Chambers Public School and later at A.B. At Lucas High School. Towards the end of his high school career, Kadri was certain that he would be selected in the NHL draft. He also played small ice hockey for the Alliance Hockey association’s London Junior Knights system, serving as a team captain on multiple small levels.

Nazem Kadri Injury & Career

Kadri started his OHL career with the Kitchener Rangers after being selected in the first round of the 2006 OHL Priority Selection, the 18th round overall.

Kadri was selected to play for Team OHL in the ADT Canada Russia Challenge but could not participate due to a jaw injury. He was later invited to the selection camp for the Canadian men’s national junior ice hockey team for the 2009 World Junior Championships.

After the 2008-09 OHL season, Kadri was drafted by Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, in the seventh round overall. On July 6, 2009, he signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the club.

He was selected to play for Team OHL in the 2009 Subway Super Series (renamed from the ADT Canada Russia Challenge).

Toronto Maple Leafs

Kadri joined the training camp with Maple Leaf before the 2009-10 season. He has played six pre-season games with the club, recording three goals and two assists.

Due to the injuries of forwards Christian Hanson and Fredrik Sjostrom, Kadri was called up to Maple Leafs on an emergency basis, making his NHL debut on February 8, 2010, against the San Jose Sharks.

Kadri recorded his first NHL point with a goal from Kris Versteeg on November 16, in a game against the Nashville Predators. On November 18, Kadri recorded his first multi-point night with two assists in a game against the New Jersey Devils two days later.

On March 19, 2011, Kadri scored the first NHL goal of his career against Boston Bruins goalkeeper Tim Thomas. Kadri was named in the 2012 AHL All-Star Game. Before the 2012-13 season, Kadri began training in the summer to gain muscle and “play more explosively” under former NHL player and Maple Leaf Gary Roberts.

On September 11, 2013, Kadri signed a new two-year, $5.8 million contract with Toronto. The NHL’s Player Safety Division has suspended Kadri for three games because on November 13, 2013, Kadri placed an elbow on the head of Minnesota Wild goaltender Nicholas Backstrom. In the 2013-14 season, his first full 82-game season, Kadri set career-high goals (20) and points (50).

Kadri was suspended twice in the 2014-15 season.

On April 1, 2016, Kadri was fined $5,000 by the NHL for his second and third diving violation of the season.

On January 23, 2017, in a game against the Calgary Flames, Kadri scored the 100th NHL goal of his career.

Kadri scored the fourth NHL hat-trick of his career in a 6-3 win over Columbus Blue Jackets on February 14, 2018. During Toronto’s first-round series against Boston in the 2019 playoffs, Kadri was suspended for the rest of the first round for cross-checking Jake DeBrusk in Game 2.

Colorado Avalanche

Kadri has had success with his new team, serving as their second-line centre, recording 19 goals and 17 assists in his first 51 games before missing the rest of the regular season due to a lower-body injury. With the regular season prematurely postponed due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs were held in a bubble at Canadian locations in the summer. Kadri rejoined the team for the playoffs and played a key role in the team’s victory in the qualifiers and first round. Colorado eventually lost to the Dallas Stars in the second round.

Kadri had 11 goals and 21 assists in 56 games, while Avalanche enjoyed a great season and won the presidential trophy as the best team in the league.

For the 2021-22 season, the NHL is back to its normal competitive structure; this will be Kadri’s best season so far, as he has scored 26 goals and recorded 59 assists, setting a new best and total points in assists.

Kadri finds himself at the centre of the controversy again in Game 3 of Avalanche’s 2022 playoff second-round series against the Blues. He collided with Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington while charging the NetFront. Kadri denied that he intended to injure Binnington. At the same time, Avalanche coach Jared Bedner insisted it was an accident resulting from a collision between Kadri and blues defender Calle Rosen. On June 26, 2022, Nazem Kadri won the first Stanley Cup of his career with the Colorado Avalanche.

International play

At the 2007 Canada Winter Games, Kadri played for Team Ontario, and they won a gold medal. At the 2007 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, he first represented Canada, and the team finished fourth. Kadri was invited to Canada’s selection camp for the 2010 World Junior Championships in Regina, Saskatchewan. After the cut in 2009, Qadri was elected to represent Canada in 2010. In Canada’s preliminary round against the United States, Kadri was one of the players selected for the shootout, scoring goalkeeper Jack Campbell to help Canada secure victory.

During the tournament, Kadri drew attention to his refusal to shake hands with Nino Niederriter of Switzerland after their semifinal match. During the gold medal match against the United States, Kadri had two assists, including one in Jordan Aberel’s game-tying goal with 1:35 remaining in the third period. However, Canada lost the game in overtime, leaving Kadri and his teammates with silver medals.
