McDavid was born on January 13, 1997, in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. His mother, Kelly, played recreational ice hockey for a year as a child before turning his attention to skiing, while his father, Brian, was a high school ice hockey player and Boston Bruins fan. McDavid began playing hockey at age three. He began playing organized youth hockey because his parents lied about his age to allow him to play with other five-year-olds. He won four Ontario Minor Hockey Association championships with the York Simcoe Express. In 2009, McDavid participated in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with his York Simcoe team, featuring future professional ice hockey player Sam Bennett.

The Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL), coming off a 24–44–14 season, selected McDavid first overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. On July 3, 2015, he signed a three-year deal worth $11.3 million, which included $3.775 million in annual bonus incentives.
On October 5, 2016, the Oilers named McDavid, their captain for the 2016–17 season. McDavid became the youngest captain in NHL history. McDavid recorded his first NHL hat trick on November 19 in a 5–2 win over the Dallas Stars. McDavid became the first player to reach 50 points in the 2016–17 season.
McDavid was honoured with the Hart Memorial Trophy for the NHL’s Most Valuable Player and the Ted Lindsey Award for Most Outstanding Player, as determined by the National Hockey League Players Association.
