Ravi was born on 12 December 1997 and hailed from Nahri village in the Sonipat district of Haryana. His father, Rakesh Dahiya, a small farmer, used to travel about 39 km daily from their town to Chhatrasal Stadium for more than a decade to deliver fresh milk and fruits, which were part of his wrestling diet. Ravi Kumar started wrestling in his teenage years and won a silver medal in the 55 kg freestyle category at the 2015 Junior World Wrestling Championships in Salvador de Bahia. He picked up an injury in 2017 that kept him out for over a year. In his comeback year, he won a silver medal at the 2018 World U23 Wrestling Championships in Bucharest, India’s only award in the competition in the 57 kg category. Ravi Kumar was undefeated in the 2019 Pro Wrestling League, representing the title-winning team Haryana Hammers.
He finished fifth at the 2019 Asian Wrestling Championships after losing the bronze medal match.
In his World Championship debut in 2019, Ravi Kumar defeated European champion Arsene Harutounian in the round of 16 and 2017 world champion Yuki Takahashi in the quarterfinals to earn one of the six quotas available for the 2020 Summer Olympics. He settled for bronze after losing to defending champion and eventual gold medalist Zaur Uguev in the semifinal round. On the back of her medal win, Ravi Kumar was inductees into the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) in October 2019.
Ravi Kumar won gold at the 2020 Asian Wrestling Championship in New Delhi and the 2021 Asian Wrestling Championship in Almaty.
At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Ravi Kumar won his first two bouts by technical superiority. In the semifinals, he pinned Kazakh wrestler Nurislam Sanayev in the last minute to win by fall after trailing in the bout on points. In the semifinal match, Ravi Kumar reportedly suffered a bite from his opponent Nurislam Sanayev. In the final, Ravi Kumar had to settle for silver as ROC wrestler Zour Uguev defeated him by 4-7 points. Ravi Kumar is the second Indian wrestler after Sushil Kumar to win Olympic silver.
At the 2022 Yasar Dogu tournament, he won the gold medal by defeating Uzbek Gulomzon Abdullayev 11–10 in the final.
