Karting

Tsunoda began his professional karting career in 2010, joining the JAF Junior Karting Championships before attending the regional class in 2013 and the national class in 2014.

Japanese Formula 4

In 2016, Suzuka made its single-seater debut at the F4 Japanese Championships with the Sutekina Racing Team for a single event. He claimed his first podium, finishing second in the first race and fourth in the second race.

In 2017, Tsunoda started his first full season of single-seater racing at the F4 Japanese Championships when JAF competed in the eastern regional series of the F4 Japanese Championships. Tsunoda finished third in the National Formula 4 Championship and won the regional championship. He competed in both championships with Honda.

Towards the end of 2018, Tsunoda was announced to join Jenzer Motorsport in the newly announced FIA Formula 3 Championship. He finished 9th in the championship with three podiums and a win, scoring all the points for the Jenzer team during the season.

FIA Formula 2 Championship

In early 2020, Honda announced that Tsunoda would join Carlin to race in the FIA Formula 2 Championship. In the 2020 season, he took three wins, four pole positions, seven podiums, and finished third in the championship with 200 points.

Formula One

In August 2020, Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda Formula One team president Franz Tost announced that Tsunoda would drive for the team in the season-finale rookie test in Abu Dhabi in December 2020. He first drove a 2018-specific car to the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy. He tested the Formula One machinery again at the Imola in January 2021, but this time, he drove an AlphaTauri-liveried Toro Rosso STR14, Toro Rosso 2019.

AlphaTauri (2021-2022)

Tsunoda replaced Daniil Kvyat and partnered with Pierre Gasly in the team for the 2021 season. His car number is 22.

In the opening Bahrain Grand Prix of the season, Tsunoda finished in ninth place. He qualified for the Spanish Grand Prix for the 16th time and later apologized after being asked if he and teammate Gasly had “the same car.” Tsunoda reached the third qualifying session (Q3) for the first time at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix but then raised the red flag after being devastated. He finished the seventh race.

Tsunoda achieved his best Formula One result up to that point in the Hungarian Grand Prix. He started the sixteenth race, improved to seventh in the finishing line, and rose to sixth after the disqualification of Sebastian Vettel.

In the next seven Grands Prix, Tsunoda advanced to Q3 in all but one but was able to convert only one to a point finish, finishing ninth in the United States Grand Prix.

Tsunoda finished eighth in the season-preliminary Bahrain Grand Prix. He failed to start the race after the failure of a power unit. He later failed to score in the 15th edition of the Australian Grand Prix. At the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Tsunoda finished seventh, ahead of his teammate Pierre Gasly.
