Football

American football, also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team in possession of the oval football, tries to advance up the field with the ball by running or passing, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, blocks the offense’s progress and takes control of the ball for themselves. Points are primarily scored by advancing the ball into the opposing team’s end zone for a touchdown or kicking the ball through the opposing goalposts for a field goal.

American football developed in the United States, originating from the sports of soccer and rugby. The first American football game was played on November 6, 1869, between two college teams, Rutgers and Princeton, using rules based on the football rules at the time.

Tua Tagovailoa was born on March 2, 1998, in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, the eldest of four children in a Samoan family to Galu Tagovailoa (father) and Diane Tagovailoa (mother). His younger brother, Taulia Tagovailoa, is a college football quarterback for the Maryland Terrapins. He transferred there in 2020 after spending a year as Tua’s backup at Alabama in 2019.
