Alexander Volkanovski Early Life
Alex began training in Greco-Roman wrestling early and won two national titles at the age of 12. He decided to quit wrestling at 14 and instead focused on a career in rugby league as a front-rower.
He played in the semi-professional rugby league for the Warilla Gorillas in the South Coast Rugby League. He won the Mick Cronin Medal in 2010 as the best player in the league. He also played a crucial role in Warrior’s 2011 Premiership-winning season and won the Man of the Match award for his team’s grand final win against Gerringong. Volkanovski then left the rugby league at 23 in late 2011 to pursue a professional career in mixed martial arts.
Coach Joe Lopez said Volkanovski began training in MMA and Greco-Roman wrestling at 22 to stay fit in the off-season of the rugby league. However, he soon realized he had a passion for sports and wanted to go as far as possible. Volkanovski quickly became a powerful counter-striker and a great offensive wrestler.
Starting as an amateur in the middleweight and leading 4-0 before becoming a professional, Volkanovski fought at various MMA organizations in the Oceania region of Asia from 2012 to July 2016 before signing with the UFC. He has won a Pacific Xtreme Combat (PCX) title and two featherweight titles at the Australian Fighting Championships (AFC). Volkanovski held a 13-1 record with 10 consecutive wins before joining the UFC.
